Lawyers and the Fiscal Number
Once you have found your "dream house", usually through a property sales agent, and you are ready to buy, we strongly suggest to see a lawyer who can act on your behalf and will consult you on all legal aspects.
Only use recommended lawyers or solicitors. We can be of help, if you look for someone qualified.
The rates that lawyers charge are very different but as a general rule, one can count with 1% of the transaction value.
Please avoid to use the same lawyer as the seller.
Anyone buying property in Portugal must have a fiscal number (Número de Contribuente).
This number is issued by the local finance department.
You have to go personally to collect the tax number, but your lawyer can usually be of assistance.
